Riley Howell, 21, right was killed after he tackled a gunman who opened fire at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Two of the four people who were injured are now in critical condition, according to police. Police said a few students, including Howell, died and several others were injured. Terrell intentionally targeted the Kennedy building, where the shooting took place, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney.

Local television news footage showed police officers escorting a tall, lanky young man with shaggy brown hair from a patrol auto. "As a friend said, 'Beautiful souls like Riley are always with us in the way they made life more lovely, '" his heartbroken family said in a statement.

One of the two students who were killed in a shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Tuesday attempted to stop the gunman by jumping on him.

At least two officers arrested Terrell after the shooting.

"It seems very much like something he would do". "What you may not hear is the first and foremost hero, as far as I'm concerned, and his name is Riley Howell".

"Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately", the university said on Twitter shortly before 6 pm.

"When we are faced with something like this, I can't tell you the feelings, the sorrow", said Jeffrey Baker, chief of the university police. "Our officers' actions definitely saved lives", he said.
