Putin says Russia will work with any US president

21 June, 2016

Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, and Italian Premier Matteo Renzi hold a joint news conference at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia, Friday, June 17, 2016.

"The strategic balance used to guarantee peace in the world, it saved us from major armed conflicts in the past 70 years", Putin said. "But we don't need them constantly interfering in our affairs, telling us how to live, and hindering Europe in building relations with us", he said.

When asked by moderator Fareed Zakaria of CNN to clarify complimentary remarks he made about U.S. Republican hopeful Donald Trump in December, Putin said they didn't amount to an endorsement of the billionaire over Democratic contender Hillary Clinton. During the meeting, part of which was broadcast on Russian state television, Juncker told Putin that "some in Europe weren't pleased" with him meeting the Kremlin strongman but stressed it was an opportunity to "exchange opinions".

The Russian president underscored that Russia likes Indian culture. He said there is no reason for NATO's continued expansion, and noted that the U.S.-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation missile defense plans pose a threat to Russian Federation.

While investment continues to declne, he said that reflects not only investor concerns about Russia's structural problems and western economic sanctions, but low oil prices which have killed off new energy industry projects.

"And I believe there are many sensible people among the fans who realise that any violations can not express their support for the team they love - any violations only jeopardise the teams they support".

"The prime minister himself said when we were at G20 in Antalya that he thinks how we should re-establish the relations in full". "The EU is our closest neighbor, and we care about what happens to our neighbors, '" Putin said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on European leaders to improve ties with his country despite sanctions.

But the enigmatic Russian leader wouldn't say what those were.

Putin also dealt with other issues in his remarks.

Asked what his views on the looming vote are in St Petersburg tonight, Putin bizarrely hinted that the PM had a secret agenda.
