Braves' Freeman takes hitting streak to season-best 30 games

05 October, 2016

Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 30 games, Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer and Daniel Castro drove in three runs, leading the surging Atlanta Braves to a 12-2 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. He came into the night hitting.189 with just four RBIs.

He has hit more home runs this year against the Phillies (six) than any other team. "That's been his issue", Mackanin said.

Atlanta Braves' Dansby Swanson celebrates in the dugout after hitting a solo home run during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, in Atlanta. They have a 66-92 record, which is the worst in the National League East, but the team has been on a roll in the final month of the season and have won 10 of their last 11 games.

"You take it for granted with this guy", Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. "I hope we keep adding to that".

Hellickson didn't seem concerned about the tweak after the game, and he won't pitch again this season. Odubel Herrera then hit a blooper to shallow left field that eluded the Braves defense and brought in Hellickson to score the game's first run.

In his past 20 games Swanson has hit.354 with eight extra-base hits (three homers), 13 RBIs and an OPS over.950.

Castro added another run-scoring single in the seventh, equaling his career high with three hits.

The Braves have five games left this season following Wednesday's game, so Freeman can only extend his hitting streak to 35 games before the end of the season.

Abbas, following Peres's death, tweeted in Arabic that his death was "a heavy loss for all humanity and for peace in the region". Peres served two terms as Israeli prime minister and was also the country's president.

On top of the hitting streak, Freeman also extended his on-base streak to 46 games earlier in the game. Washington's Jayson Werth reached in 46 straight games before his run was halted August 18. Freeman's hit Wednesday broke a tie with Jackie Bradley Jr. for the longest hitting streak in baseball this season.

"They just kept coming at it", Snitker said.

While surging late in the season to counter a terrible first half, Atlanta has won 19 games in the last at-bat, the most in the National League.

Atlanta tied the game in the sixth on Swanson's third home run, his first in Turner Field.

Philadelphia LF Roman Quinn, who left Tuesday's game against the Braves with a strained oblique after registering hits in his first three at-bats, may be finished. It's not known if he'll get back on the field this season.

Holyfield lives in the Atlanta area and was among those who carried the torch during the opening ceremony for the 1996 Summer Olympics.

"He's more scared than anything that it's going to recur or that he's going to make it worse, so I told him to let me know (Thursday) and be honest with me", manager Pete Mackanin said. Hellickson is 1-0 with a 4.08 ERA and 11 strikeouts in his career against the Braves. He has started at least 27 games in five of his six full seasons in the major leagues. Collmenter is 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA in 12 career appearances, five starts, against the Phillies.

Braves: RHP Josh Collmenter (3-0, 4.19) looks to remain unbeaten in his third start of the season for Atlanta.
