This suspect allegedly refused to stop attacking the trooper so bystander shot and killed him. "The suspect is getting the better of the trooper and is on top of him", Milstead said as he described the incident to reporters, "striking the trooper's head on the pavement".
Col. Frank Milstead, directors of the DPS, says an "uninvolved third party" who was driving by noticed the trooper wrestling with the suspect and stopped to assist. The suspect shot the trooper at least once in the chest/shoulder-area and tackled the trooper to the ground.
"I don't know that my trooper would be alive today without his assistance", Milstead added.
The trooper, 27-year DPS veteran, Edward Anderson, is in serious but stable condition at Abrazo West hospital in Goodyear. It happened while the trooper was investigating a rollover crash with shots fired where a woman was thrown from the vehicle. He was setting flares on the highway when he was ambushed. A woman involved in the rollover crash died as well. Reportedly, the suspect ignored the Good Samaritan's commands to stop his attack. It was unknown what caused the rollover, and whether the suspect was involvement in the initial 4:20 a.m. report of gunshots. Another motorist used the trooper's radio to call authorities.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was shot early Thursday morning.

The man who flagged Schober down was another good Samaritan. The suspect is dead, and the trooper is expected to survive. Prosecutors have not said if they will review the shooting by the driver.
The freakish story unfolded Thursday after Trooper Edward Andersson was dispatched to the scene of a 911 call in which a driver said he'd been shot at from the median of Interstate 10.
"The trooper says, 'Please, help me, ' and asks the uninvolved third party for help", Milstead said.
Schober and the other man were interviewed at the scene by police and then taken to the Buckeye police station for a statement. But he was clear about one thing in particular, saying: "We do know that the citizen who stopped and assisted our trooper absolutely saved [the trooper's life]". "Thank you. Thank you for the support".
