'The Lego Batman Movie' A Surprisingly Good Film

Warner Bros. and Warner Animation Group come together for a spin-off the installment of "The LEGO Movie" in "The LEGO Batman Movie", scheduled to be released on February 10. Judging from this first trailer, it looks like another ultra-detailed, self-aware adventure with much more going on in terms of mixing genres.

The Lego Movie made $469m worldwide while analysts are expecting The Lego Batman Movie to open with $60m this weekend. Sure, there are plenty of wisecracks and throwaway gags for eagle-eyed grownups and Batman nuts, but the movie grinds to a halt several times so Batman can learn A Very Important Life Lesson. "It allows me to drop into the Batman voice when I need to drop the hammer at home".

It lightens up Batman's world to near '60s levels (at times the self-referential comedy is practically at Mystery Science Theatre 3000 levels). But thankfully he's not the only great part of the movie. He could pay some attention to Richard Grayson (voiced by Michael Cera), the orphan whom he accidentally adopted, but instead he tries to undercut new police commissioner Barbara Gordon (voiced by Rosario Dawson), a reformer who wants to do things differently from her retiring dad (voiced by Hector Elizondo). I loved this movie! "That was a bummer for me", says McKay, who recruited Williams as his Lego Two-Face. Now, the trailer for the latest LEGO spinoff film is finally here and The LEGO NINJAGO Movie is just as amusing as you expect it to be. Like its predeccesor, this film also revels in the freedom and the boundless creativity the Lego universe thrives on, and, brick by brick, builds a superhero movie that is quite unlike any other. He's not trying to be amusing, but he is, at times ridiculously so.

What's truly remarkable about this animated laugh-fest is the intelligent manner in which it deals with the psychology behind those mysterious facets of Batman and helps him become a healthier, happier guy by the end. Scratch that, it more than works; it's borderline brilliant. The jokes do not always land, but they happen so fast that they can be hard to catch.

Behind-the-scenes footage from the film shows several of the actors in front their microphones, recording dialogue with their LEGO counterparts in hand, and McKay said they weren't the only ones who used the tiny characters to glean some inspiration. I'm not trying to get sappy here and neither do the filmmakers at any point, but there is a strong message in there that is great for both kids and adults. "So we have the JC Stunt Team doing all the action, in live action - we film it and then animate it". Some of the jokes went right over his head, but the visuals and physical humor were more than enough to keep him excited.

If anything, The Lego Batman Movie may be a little too energetic. Even if you just focused on the references to Batman lore there is so much to enjoy, whether it's Tom Hardy's version of Bane interacting with Danny DeVito's imagining of Penguin, or the fact that in one beat Batman attempts to embody the darkness of Christian Bale, and in another resembles the camp style of Adam West.
