An Afghan commando Saturday killed two American soldiers and wounded two others during a joint operation in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said, in the latest so-called insider attack on worldwide forces.

Khogyani said that the Afghan soldier had been killed during the attack.

A spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan earlier told CBS News they were "aware of an incident" involving USA troops in the eastern part of the country.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the wounded soldier had been evacuated for treatment and the incident was under investigation.

Vice President Pence addressed the attack in his remarks at an event in Wisconsin on repealing Obamacare.

"Allow me to take a moment to acknowledge what I learned about on my way to Wisconsin, the loss of service members that took place in Afghanistan".

The three previous USA soldiers deaths in Achin make up the entirety of US combat fatalities in Afghanistan in 2017.

The Taliban on their part have pronounced it as part of their ongoing annual offensives, and claimed four US soldiers had been shot dead.

The Taliban is claiming responsibility for the deaths, by using one of their members to infiltrate the Afghan Army. "We will release more information when appropriate", it added. "The soldier was also killed in the return fire", Khogyani told AFP. "Our hopes and prayers are with their families". An Afghan official said the deaths and injury stem from an attack by an Afghan soldier, who also died.

In March, three US soldiers were injured in Helmand Province after being fired upon by an Afghan soldier.

The latest attack comes as US President Donald Trump's administration is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan.

The Afghan branch of the Islamic State, known as ISIS-K, is mainly composed of militants pulled from other groups and has turned into one of the main counterterrorism efforts for the United States in Afghanistan.

In April, the United States military for the first time used its largest non-nuclear weapon, aptly nicknamed the Mother of All Bombs, or MOAB, on a suspected ISIS tunnel complex in the same region of Afghanistan.

This is when at least one USA service member remains on watch while Afghan and US military forces are on patrol, dine together or are sleeping.

There are now 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan training, advising and assisting the Afghanistan army.
