Democratic leaders have little to show for their opposition to Trump up to now, despite the president's sagging poll numbers and public friction between him, Ryan and McConnell. During an appearance earlier this week with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, McConnell said "there is zero chance, no chance, we won't raise the debt ceiling".

U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his attacks on members of his Republican Party on Thursday, this time lashing out at them for creating a "mess" of the debt ceiling legislation process.

"Believe me, if we have to close down our government we're building that wall", Trump warned Tuesday in an angry and divisive speech that made some Republicans wince.

"If we have to close down our government, we're building that wall", he said Tuesday in Arizona, referring to the physical barrier he promised to construct between the USA and Mexico.

McConnell, at an event in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday, did not respond to questions about Trump's comments.

Trump's refusal to draw a clear line between himself and white nationalist groups has been the latest source of growing tension within the Republican Party. -Mexican border could complicate efforts to keep the government running.

The two calls underscore Trump's increasing frustration with Congressional Republicans over their continued efforts to keep the Russian Federation probe alive.

McConnell said in his statement that they have "a lot of work ahead of us, and we are committed to advancing our shared agenda together, and anyone who suggests otherwise is clearly not part of the conversation". She adds: "anybody who is surprised by that has not been paying attention for two years".

His premise, for now, seems to be that a government shutdown would cause so much political pain for lawmakers that they would ultimately choose to pass a spending bill with money for the wall rather than continue to suffer the wrath of constituents bereft of government services.

Markets are getting nervous about the prospect of a government shutdown this fall, but maybe they should relax: stocks went up last time the government closed up shop for a bit.

White House spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders insisted Thursday that the president's relationships with GOP leaders "are fine".

The other problem with Trump's attack on Democrats is the filibuster was not the problem when it came to passing major bills he wanted.

It's a total eclipse by President Donald Trump of Barack Obama.

Trump retweeted the series, titled "The Best Eclipse Ever!" from Twitter user, @JerryTravone.

The government spends more money than it brings in through revenue, and it borrows money to cover the difference by issuing debt.

The House has already passed a spending bill with funding for the wall. Jeff Sessions, the attorney general who's also been sharply criticized by Trump. The measure includes $784 million for 32 miles of new border fencing and $498 million for 28 miles of levee wall in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas; another $251 million would go to building back-up fencing in the heavily fortified San Diego area, AP reported.
