Donald Trump has said talking to North Korea is "not the answer", after the Pyongyang regime flew a ballistic missile over United States ally Japan.

"Threatening and destabilizing actions only increase the North Korean regime's isolation in the region and among all nations of the world", Trump said after the North's missile soared nearly 1,700 miles into the Pacific Ocean, triggering alert warnings in northern Japan and shudders throughout Northeast Asia.

Gen. Sam Greaves said Wednesday's missile launch was a "key milestone".

"We will continue developing ballistic missile defense technologies to stay ahead of the threat as it evolves", he said. That missile traveled over the northern island of Hokkaido and landed in the sea.
