With four years of estrangement from the BJP now behind him and the saffron party being an ally in Bihar now, JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar has been compelled to leave his campaign for special category state status for the state, a project close to his heart for over a decade.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today addressed the Centenary Celebrations of Patna University.
The state BJP president has been hinting that a bonanza was on the cards, terming the prime minister's visit as a "Diwali gift" to the people of Bihar in general and Mokama in particular. "The Centre attaches topmost importance to the development of eastern India", Modi said. Modi said probably so much work in infrastructure has not been done in Bihar in such a short period of time after Independence. Later, speaking at the centenary celebrations of Patna University, the prime minister showered praise on the chief minister.
The four highway projects for which the foundation stone will be laid, include the four-laning of Aunta-Simariya section of NH-31 and the construction of six-lane Ganga Setu at a cost of Rs 1,161 crore. PM Modi also said it was a "blot" that Indian universities do not figure among the top 500 of the world and noted that the government has made a decision to give autonomy and Rs 10,000 crore to top 10 public and private universities over the next five years to make them world-class.
"There is no state in the country where one does not find a Patna University alumnus among the top five bureaucrats". Pointing out the Modi government's initiative for the building of the roadways, Modi said that the previous leaders were skeptical of developing roadways, the NDA government is in the process of doubling the pace of road building as part of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna. This was the first occasion since Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar broke the mahagathbandhan and joined hands with the BJP to form a new government in the state, that he shared the stage with the Prime Minister.
Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, who also holds the portfolio of water resources, will accompany the prime minister for the ceremony. He said that he met many people from the rural India and the government is working tirelessly to fulfil their aspirations.
