Barack Obama Magnet IB emerged as the clear winning name.
Imagine being a black student at a school named after a Confederate.
President Obama reflects a type of person "who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves", according to the school's PTA president.
The decision to change the name was made following a vote on Tuesday by the school's Parent-Teacher association.
The school is now named after the late Jefferson Davis. Students from each class at the school gave presentations on their favorite pick. The public school's enrollment in 2017 showed 98 percent of black students, with an overall enrollment of 97 percent black students.
However, the name change is still set to take place for the 2018-19 school year.
