Manchester United were interested in signing Eric Dier over the summer, but Jose Mourinho says Nemanja Matic was always the player he "really wanted".

Jose Mourinho headed off questions about Harry Kane's absence from Saturday's PremierLeague showdown between ManchesterUnited and Tottenham.

He wrote in his autobiography "Brave New World": "Mourinho and I had finished our interviews at Old Trafford [after the 1-0 defeat by Manchester United, December 2016] and the players were doing their warm-down on the pitch".

"After Ander's words and the feelings of all the players, I don't need speak about the words".

Phil Jones is available to face Spurs and Eric Bailly may also return, following both centre-backs' respective injuries.

Asked if Shaw has a future at United, Mourinho said: "Why not?"

"If you want to speak about his words I would be very disappointed if his words were different".

As a result, the Manchester Evening Post claim that Shaw could reunite with his ex-boss Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur as the Argentine was the main influence for Shaw's growth at Southampton and is still looked upon highly by the young full-back.

Mourinho admitted Shaw's chances of a recall were remote.

"One more training session but he's the only one from the injured group that can be ready". Luke Shaw was just honest.

He said: "I hope every time I have one day less than the opponent you ask the same question but I don't think it makes an impact because my feeling is the majority of the players who played that match are not going to play tomorrow".

"He has a future here, I think he has, but the situation is not easy because he comes from injury after injury after injury".
