Conyers holds a powerful position on Capitol Hill as ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, and Pelosi on Sunday defended what he has done as a longtime member of Congress. "Is it two? I think there has to be - John Conyers is an icon in our country", she said.
Amid a congressional investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Michigan Rep. John Conyers, the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee says he will step aside from that role.
Conyers has repeatedly denied the allegations made against him, and continued to do so in his statement. "But I have come to believe that my presence as ranking member would not serve these efforts while the ethics committee investigation is pending".
The development comes after BuzzFeed News reported that Conyers' office paid a former staffer more than $27,000 to settle a complaint.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that, as a mother of four daughters, she takes accusations of sexual harassment seriously, and called for the ethics investigation after a woman alleged Mr. Conyers fired her for refusing his sexual advances.

Conyers added, "I would urge them to continue to do so for any Member accused of wrongdoing". Do you? They have not really come forward.
The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations involving Conyers after BuzzFeed reported that Conyers office paid $27,000 to a former female staffer who alleged that she was sacked after rebuffing his sexual advances.

Though she argued that both Conyers and his accusers were entitled to "due process", Pelosi said the veracity of the accusations was "for the ethics committee to review", and dodged a question about whether she believed his accusers.
