Manchester United fans were left shell-shocked by two handsome Ashley Young goals that came inside of the first 25 minutes vs Watford, helping his team head into half-time with a comfortable lead.

The Hornets showed attacking intent again at the start of the second half, but the resolute Red Devils defence held firm in the opening stages.

United suffered an apparent injury blow as Nemanja Matic limped off the pitch in the 55th minute and was replaced by Ander Herrera.

Seeking to register a third successive league win for only the second time in the Premier League era, Watford began by spraying the ball around assertively, but in the blink of an eye they were 3-0 down.

The defender was made to wait three months for his first league start following his £31 million transfer in the summer, with Jose Mourinho insisting the 23-year-old needed time to adapt to English football after just two seasons with Benfica's first team.

Young was once touted to leave Old Trafford but publicly stated his desire to stay and fight for his place.

Gomes was nearly rooted to the spot as Young's shot curled into the top corner.

"So for United to go to Watford and turn up expecting a result, it's a very hard game for United".

Had it not been for Gomes it would have been 4-0 by half-time, the Brazilian getting down to save from Lukaku and then reacting extraordinarily quickly to palm Lingard's follow-up over the bar.

The last Watford goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet against Manchester United in a competitive fixture was Tony Coton; in a 1-0 win back in September 1986 at Vicarage Road. Soon afterwards, Richarlison's header rattled the crossbar.

Deeney reduced the arrears with 13 minutes left, sending David de Gea the wrong way from the spot after a rash foul on Pereyra by Marcos Rojo.

It should have been even worse for Watford at the break, but Gomes saved well from Lukaku before jumping to his feet to make an even better stop from Lingard's follow-up effort.
