Bayern Munich and Besiktas crossed paths for the only previous time in the 1997-98 group stage, with both games ending in 2-0 victories for the Bavarians. Bayern went behind in the first period before second-half goals from Sandro Wagner and Robert Lewandowski.

Both sides staged an evenly balanced performance but things changed with 16 minutes played as Domagoj Vida received his marching orders after bringing down Robert Lewandowski, who was through and running goalwards. Lewandowski sealed the win with two late goals.

With two minutes of the first half remaining, Kingsley Coman broke through down the left and crossed into the area.

"It's very hard for any team to play in the Champions League with 10 men", Heynckes said post-match.

Heynckes, who steered the five-time champions to the 2013 title, turns 73 in May, but says he still feels the "tension build" for a Champions League game.

They can, though, count on the experience of former Real Madrid defender Pepe - who will be making his 95th Champions League appearance - his fellow Portuguese veteran Ricardo Quaresma and Dutch striker Ryan Babel.

It is the eighth season in a row he has scored in the knockout phase, and Muller has netted in each of his two Champions League starts at the Allianz Arena this season.

Indeed, Senol Gunes' side will fancy their chances of nicking an away goal considering Die Roten have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight games in front of their own fans. David Alaba's effort was blocked, then Mats Hummels headed straight at goalkeeper Fabri after a brilliant cross from James Rodriguez. "In the first half we lacked tempo, our passing wasn't precise enough and it allowed Beşiktaş to play", he said, adding that Bayern "were a different team in the second half". Lewandowski also turned provider for Coman to double the advantage.

Then in December, the humiliating defeat in Paris was avenged when Bayern beat PSG 3-1 in Munich - although it wasn't enough to prevent them finishing second in their Champions League group. The Polish striker is in strong form as the clinical goalscorer has found the scoresheet in each of Bayern Munich's last three matches.

The German champions appear to have received a favourable last-16 draw against opponents who are now fourth in the Turkish Super Lig standings.
