Samsung launches data-saving and privacy-protecting Samsung Max app for Android

26 February, 2018

"With Samsung Max, our users in every corner of the globe now have increased autonomy and control over their data usage and privacy in an era of rising security threats, fraudulent apps and user profiling".

The app will be preloaded on all the new smartphones of Galaxy A and Galaxy J series in the countries India, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. It achieves this by compressing images and video as well as music files and web pages where possible. Moreover, the app permits the user to specify which applications can consume data and it automatically blocks all applications from using data in the background. Similarly, it lets you manage data permissions for specific apps and customise data consumption for existing apps to save your data for other useful tasks.

Two of the main features that Samsung Max comes with are Data Saving Mode and Privacy Protection Mode.

Not only this, this app can encrypt your data when it is sent through non-secure Wi-Fi networks.

Samsung Max app launched; comes with 'Data Saving Mode' and 'Privacy Protection'

The app was given a number of new features over the past few years, but last August the company revealed it was pulling the plug on Opera Max once and for all.

Unfortunately, as with many Samsung apps, Samsung Max will only work on certain Samsung Galaxy-branded devices. The mode's tracker blocking and DNS (Domain Name System) masking service will help to access the web safely both via mobile and wireless network.

While the Samsung Max by default serves ads, you can choose whether to view ads inside the app or on the lock screen only while your device is plugged in and charging. But in 2014, it launched the standalone Opera Max browser for Android, created to get its users more bang from their data plan, along with some VPN-like features. The latter can be enabled by switching to the premium mode.

It seems that Samsung has taken upon itself to bring the app from the dead. " said Seounghoon Oh, Vice President, Samsung R&D Institute India. The app is now available for free download via the Google Play Store for select Galaxy devices. "Because of this, we are now introducing Samsung Max to our mid-range devices as an exclusive and unique service that sets Samsung devices apart from the rest of the smartphone market", he added.
