On Tuesday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to condemn the state's sanctuary law and join a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit that contends it's unconstitutional.

By posting the entire list of inmates and release times, the department says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can get the information without the sheriff's office having to communicate specifically. Supervisor Andrew Do was absent.

"To cooperate is not coercion".

The board's vote on Tuesday was heavily criticized by immigrant advocates.

Supervisors initially voted 3-0 during closed session on Nelson's request but Supervisor Todd Spitzer later added his support to make it 4-0.

"Remember that resolutions are largely just that: They are symbolic".

The "Who's in Jail" database could provide a model for other departments chafing under SB54, the law that took effect this year prohibiting police or sheriffs from informing the feds when illegal immigrants are to be released.

"The Sheriff's Department announced yesterday ... the Sheriff's Department is going to start putting every single in custody on the website", he said.

"Attorney General Jeff Sessions is seeking to throw out this law".

When some in the audience jeered him, Spitzer said, "You can boo me all you want, but you haven't worked the streets the way I have".

"Our focus is on criminals, not on the community", he said, and reiterated the policy does not mean they will pursue and detain people suspected to be in the country illegally. "So they see it our way".

People opposing "sanctuary state" attend the Orange County Board of Supervisors meeting in Santa Ana on March 27, 2018. "And that means bolstering our cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and stopping our county from becoming a sanctuary for criminal illegal immigrants". It's a public safety issue to me, it's not about immigration at all.

During public comment, Fullerton resident Bethany Anderson said immigrants, statistically, commit less crimes than citizens.

A number of studies have concluded immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than US citizens, though a 2009 study co-authored by Vaughan disputed those findings due to "contrary information" and a lack of reliable data.

"They shouldn't be conflicted", Nelson said of police.

"California has made a decision to poke the president and his administration in the eye and I'd rather that they just not involve us", Nelson said. "Will you be able to do that?"

Earlier in the day, she and another sanctuary law opponent were the only two to mount a counter demonstration against a protest of the supervisors' resolution. We love all people. "We have to be compliant with the law that was passed, although we didn't agree with it ..." The case often has been cited because the man responsible for her death had been deported five times and had seven felony convictions.

West Palm Beach is one of 23 cities and states - including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago - that received letters from the Justice Department in January demanding documentary proof of compliance with the law.

Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher, who represents Orange County, said the sanctuary law was "doing nothing more than attracting millions more people to come to this country and to consume the very wealth that is necessary for our quality of life".
