On Tuesday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to condemn the state's sanctuary law and join a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit that contends it's unconstitutional.
By posting the entire list of inmates and release times, the department says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can get the information without the sheriff's office having to communicate specifically. Supervisor Andrew Do was absent.
"To cooperate is not coercion".
The board's vote on Tuesday was heavily criticized by immigrant advocates.
Supervisors initially voted 3-0 during closed session on Nelson's request but Supervisor Todd Spitzer later added his support to make it 4-0.
"Remember that resolutions are largely just that: They are symbolic".
The "Who's in Jail" database could provide a model for other departments chafing under SB54, the law that took effect this year prohibiting police or sheriffs from informing the feds when illegal immigrants are to be released.
"The Sheriff's Department announced yesterday ... the Sheriff's Department is going to start putting every single in custody on the website", he said.
"Attorney General Jeff Sessions is seeking to throw out this law".
When some in the audience jeered him, Spitzer said, "You can boo me all you want, but you haven't worked the streets the way I have".

During public comment, Fullerton resident Bethany Anderson said immigrants, statistically, commit less crimes than citizens.
A number of studies have concluded immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than US citizens, though a 2009 study co-authored by Vaughan disputed those findings due to "contrary information" and a lack of reliable data.
"They shouldn't be conflicted", Nelson said of police.
