Di Modica was not pleased when "Fearless Girl" appeared almost 30 years later, and in an emotional news conference last year threatened to go downtown and turn his bull around, so that it would no longer be facing the new statue.
The diminutive four-foot-tall monument created by sculptor Kristen Visbal was first planted in front of the Bull on International Women's Day previous year by US financial firm State Street Global Advisors to call out corporate America's gender gap, and to encourage more companies to include women on their boards.
"We are proud to be home to the Fearless Girl", Mayor de Blasio said. The city authorities want to move the small sculpture to the building of the NY stock exchange.
The girl statue was commissioned by State Street Global Advisors, the fund management arm of Boston-based State Street, to call attention to the role of women in corporate America and its "gender diversity index" fund.
But that attraction has caused safety concerns, as Fearless Girl was located on a narrow median on Broadway, de Blasio said in a statement. Countless young girls have posed beside the statue, or hugged it, or adorned it with pink pussy hats and Wonder Woman crowns.

Local, national average gas prices highest since 2015
US crude production, meanwhile, was seen at 10.69 million barrels a day this year, down 0.1% from the previous forecast. The price is up three cents over the past month, up 18 cents over the past month and up 29 cents from one year ago.
She added that she finds the new location "exciting", but that she believes the statue's message has extended beyond finance.
Not included in the news release, which quoted the financial firm's president and various elected leaders: the artist Arturo Di Modica, who created the roughly 7,000-pound bronze bull and, in 1989, deposited it downtown without permission.
As it happens, that's the spot where the Fearless Girl is headed next. But public support was so great that the city gave it a permanent home nearby.
State Street's investment arm, State Street Global Advisors, will work with the mayor's office to relocate Fearless Girl by the end of the year. "My bull is a symbol for America".
At a press conference a year ago, Di Modica told reporters that "Fearless Girl" tarnished the positive message of the bull, which is "a better America and a better world". The firm denied wrongdoing.
