The mysterious line actually comes from a message police say the alleged Toronto killer posted on Facebook minutes before the van rampage that left 10 pedestrians dead.

25-year-old Alek Minassian is accused of plowing his rented van into pedestrians on a busy Toronto avenue, killing 10 and wounding 15; Molly Line stories. Fourteen others were injured. A Toronto police officer said Tuesday that most of the victims in Monday's attack were women but it was not yet clear whether women were deliberately targeted.

Incels have nonetheless found or returned to other online gathering places, including 4chan, an anonymous message board that has for years been home to a dark, and sometimes disturbing, corner of the web, often characterised by such misogyny.

In it, he praised Elliot Rodger, who in 2014 shot and killed six people in Isla Vista, California.

Minassian's Facebook message also included a line that read: "The incel rebellion has already begun".

Ging adds the Facebook post used terminology common to incel forums, such as references "Chads" and "Stacys," the respective male and female archetypes of the sexually active masses whom incels blame for their sexual rejection.

CBC News says that before that attack, Rodger posted a video on social media in which he "raged about a number of women turning down his advances, rendering men like him "incels", a term used to describe people who are involuntarily celibate. He wrote in a suicide note that feminists had ruined his life.
