Past anthems have included Pitbull's "We Are One (Ole Ola)", Shakira's "Waka Waka", and Ricky Martin's "The Cup Of Life".

According to reports in Billboard and other publications, the track is to be released on 25 May, and is being produced by Diplo, the USA producer behind hits with his group Major Lazer including Lean On and Cold Water.

Will Smith and Nicky Jam, alongside Kosovo singer Era Istrefi, will perform the official 2018 FIFA World Cup song, Billboard reports.

Naturally, with Smith having a track record of absolute bangers such as "Miami", "Nod Your Head", "Summertime", "Getting Jiggy With It", "Men In Black" and "Switch" to name just a few, it's got fans excited.

Tradition dictates that the track will be performed at either the World Cup opening ceremony, which will be on June 14 before Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia kick off the tournament at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, or at the closing ceremony ahead of the final at the same venue on July 15. Nelson told Vibe that they would be performing it in Russian Federation.

The song marks a comeback for the American actor Will Smith, who was a popular hip-hop artist as part of a duo with DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince in the 1980s and 1990s, and then later on as a solo artist.

While it's nearly certain that an original track will be written for Russian Federation 2018, The Toe Poke wonders if Smith might just appropriate one of his old songs to fit the bill.

Will this year's song soar or land with a thud? World Cup themes have been a mainstay since 1962; will this year's live up to the hype?

And the worst of these so-called "anthems?".
