Forecasters have warned Alberto, the first named storm of the season, is likely to bring torrential rains and flooding to the state - particularly the panhandle and south Florida.

On Friday afternoon, the center of Alberto was meandering in the Caribbean about 85 miles south-southeast of Cozumel Mexico with sustained winds of 40 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Rain - you're seeing it already if you've ventured outside - and scattered thunderstorms are possible today.

Still expect the main impacts for Middle Georgia to be heavy rainfall as Alberto moves closer and makes landfall along the Gulf Coast.

Alberto will likely come ashore, potentially as a tropical storm, somewhere along the Gulf Coast late Monday into early Tuesday.

The storm is so ragged that a lot of the nasty weather will be to the right of the center.

The NHC predicted 10 inches to 15 inches of rain with isolated totals of 25 inches in the Yucatan Peninsula and western Cuba.

Scott said the Florida National Guard has 5,500 members available for deployment if needed, and state agencies are actively monitoring Alberto and standing by to respond as needed. "This will cause a concern for flooding across east central Florida, especially in areas that received heavy rainfall earlier this month".

Navarre Beach Fire Chief Danny Fureigh said double red flags will possibly start flying on Sunday if the surf reaches three feet. The service warns of a high risk of rip currents for beaches along the Florida coast. Thursday's shift aligns it more with a track similar to the European model, which has been a little more consistent, showing a tropical or subtropical storm drifting ashore near New Orleans. However, I caution that we are still under a tropical storm and storm surge watch meaning tropical storm force winds and coastal flooding are still possible.

Storm surge and tropical storm watches have been issued from Florida to the mouth of the Mississippi River in the gulf. The overnight Euro run continued to suggest a slow-moving, stronger system heading toward the central Gulf Coast.
