'I wish' I didn't pick Jeff Sessions as attorney general

Trump lobbied for months to have Jeff Sessions take control of the Russia probe — despite Sessions being a key witness in the investigation

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that special counsel Robert Mueller has been looking into Trump's long-simmering anger over Sessions' recusal from the Russian Federation investigation-a decision the president blames for his current mounting legal troubles. The President made the request on several occasions - each to no avail.

Trump's legal team has asked to review classified information about the origins of the FBI investigation to prepare the president for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is now leading the investigation into ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a Trump ally, said last July he would oppose firing Sessions because of his vigorous implementation of the conservative agenda. He adds, "It is still more evidence of his fealty to the rule of law as he sees it that Sessions refused to bow to the will of the president and "unrecuse" (something I have never heard of in nearly 30 years of studying and practicing criminal and ethics law)".

Gowdy told CBS that Trump is just "expressing frustration that Attorney General Sessions should have shared these reasons for recusal before he took the job".

The president now says he regrets hiring Jeff Sessions as US Attorney General.

Appearing on the CBN News show The Global Lane, Nunberg said Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Attorney General Sessions are treating Trump like he's a mafioso figure.

In a Fox News interview, Gowdy said the FBI's use of Halper was not inappropriate, as Trump claims. "There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else!'"

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment on Giuliani's statements.

President Trump has interpreted the existence of the source as the Federal Bureau of Investigation planting a spy in his campaign, according to his many recent tweets on the subject. Giuliani on Wednesday only offered assurances Mr. Trump would not fire Sessions during the Mueller investigation, because of the "distraction" it would cause.

Some people close to the president have said privately that they believed the recusal was overly broad and done too hastily in the middle of public scrutiny over Mr. Sessions's congressional testimony.
