Franklin passed away at 9.50am surrounded by family and friends at her home in Detroit where she had been under hospice care, a statement read. "I'm just so sad that we had to lose her".

The statement continued: "Thank you for your compassion and prayers".

"In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade- our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect". "There were times that we were asked to go to the back of the restaurant - say - or we couldn't use the bathrooms".

Her last public performance came last November at Sir Elton's Aids Foundation's 25th anniversary gala in NY. As if that wasn't unbelievable enough, she wasn't done smashing records and also became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the second in the UK Hall of Fame.

Franklin's music also helped serve as a springboard for a number of young guitarists who later became legends themselves.

She won 18 Grammy Awards and had global success with songs like "Respect", "Spanish Harlem" and "Natural Woman".

According to CNN, Franklin was extremely private and rarely discussed her personal life.

She performed at the inaugurations of Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, and at the funeral for civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks.

With Franklin's passing, many key figures in the sports world took time to remember her, reflecting on her legacy and the impact that the singer had on their lives. By 1966, she left Columbia and signed with Atlantic Records, with whom she eventually recorded one of her biggest hits - her cover of Otis Redding's "Respect."

Franklin - who was widely known by only her first name, in true diva style - rose from singing gospel in her father's church to regularly topping rhythm and blues and pop charts in the 1960s and 1970s.

A professional singer by her late teens and a superstar by her mid-20s, Franklin had long ago settled any arguments over who was the greatest popular vocalist of her time. She was also not in the photo that Fox ran on air.

Tributes to the "Queen of Soul" have flowed in from entertainment figures.

Anthony said her footprint really started during the civil rights movement. "She will forever be our Queen of Soul".

However, it was not until a decade later until she had her first major hit when 'I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)' became her first single to crack the Billboard top 10.

Following Franklin's death, Diana Ross simply wrote on Twitter: "I'm sitting in prayer for the wonderful golden spirit Aretha Franklin".

Armstrong said: "I'm very sad because I'm going to miss her". I'm just here. I love her, I love her.
