Although Dean was part of the White House-led efforts under President Richard Nixon to cover up the Watergate scandal, his decision to testify to Congress about it was crucial to exposing the affair and causing Nixon to resign from office 44 years ago.

A source close to the president told Reuters on Saturday the extent of McGahn's cooperation was "a tactical or strategic mistake" instigated by Trump's first legal team and it should not have been allowed to happen because McGahn should have been covered by executive privilege.

The information McGahn provided included the president's attempts to fire the special counsel, and Trump's comments and actions during his firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, according to the Times.

However, McGahn's lawyer gave only a small amount of information about what was said to Mueller.

President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani used the line Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" with Chuck Todd.

"The president's position is he did nothing wrong, and if he did nothing wrong, he has nothing to fear from his White House counsel having a full sit down with the special counsel", Dershowitz told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" on Sunday.

The Times, citing a dozen current and former White House officials and others briefed on the matter, reported the White House Counsel Don McGahn has given at least three voluntary interviews with investigators totaling 30 hours over the past nine months.

He added in response to Mr Trump's tweets that he doubts the president has "ANY IDEA what McGahn has told Mueller. I wanted to gain from John's wisdom", Davis told Politico.

Mr Mueller is investigating possible collusion between Russian Federation and Mr Trump's team in the 2016 U.S. election. The former FBI director James Comey (fired by Trump in an event looked at by Mueller regarding potential obstruction of justice), fired deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe and fired FBI agent Peter Strzok are among those reported under threat of similar treatment.

Trump on Sunday continued to rail against the Mueller investigation, which he has labeled a "witch hunt".

After the report was released, President Trump confirmed in a tweet that he had allowed Mr McGahn and other White House staff "to fully co-operate with the special counsel".

Critics of the president have recently compared his decision to target the security clearances of critics and those involved in the Russian Federation investigation to the "enemies list" created by the Nixon White House to keep track of political opponents they meant to target with punitive measures.

The counter-punch comes after days of criticism from former USA national security officials and military leaders who've cast Trump's cancellation of Brennan's clearance - an apparent retaliation for his criticism of the president - as a unsafe precedent. Mr Trump tweeted, referencing the indiscriminate and damaging allegations made by senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s to expose communists.
