Russian Federation is "stuck" in Syria and looking for others to fund post-war reconstruction there, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said, describing this as an opportunity for Washington to press for Iranian forces to quit the country.
"Some Israeli officials have been floating the idea of a "grand bargain" under which the U.S. "would ease sanctions" on Russia, imposed after its annexation of Crimea, "in exchange for Russian assistance addressing United States and Israeli concerns about Iranian military entrenchment in Syria", the Los Angeles Times reported, as Netanyahu paid his most recent visit to Moscow, shortly before the Helsinki summit.
"There won't be any new sanctions if there's no further interference", he said, before specifying that "how we resolve the interference in the past remains to be seen". He did not elaborate.
European countries have sought to save the nuclear deal, saying it is working as intended by keeping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons for now. In return, Iran accepted restrictions on its nuclear activities, increasing the time it would need to produce an atomic bomb - if it chose to do so. In order to reduce tourists' concerns about U.S. sanctions, the Iranian vice president announced that foreign tourists' passports will not be stamped in Iran. Iran also has proxies in the region including Lebanon's Hezbollah.
"So they said they were not going to sign this statement". Kurdistan 24 suggested then that Trump was seeking Russia's assistance in restraining Iran in order to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria, and Bolton's comments on Thursday essentially confirmed that.
