The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing Thursday for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who says he sexually assaulted her as a teenager, as a claim of sexual misconduct emerged from another woman.
"This is a smear, plain and simple", Kavanaugh said in a statement issued through the White House.
That would mark a change from the 1991 Judiciary Committee hearings into allegations by Anita Hill that she had been sexually harassed by then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.
The committee reached out to the friend on Tuesday as someone who was possibly in attendance at the party where Ford alleges an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her, put his hand over her mouth to stifle her screams and tried to remove her clothes.
The committee said it would not negotiate on other points, though, including Ms Ford's desire for additional witnesses and a request to testify after, not before, Mr Kavanaugh.
In a Saturday email, attorneys Katz and Lisa Banks said many aspects of the proposal made by the Senate panel "are fundamentally inconsistent with the committee's promise of a fair, impartial investigation into her allegations, and we are disappointed with the leaks and the bullying that have tainted the process".
Still, the White House and Republicans have cast doubt on Ms Ford's allegations.
McConnell was criticized by Ford's supporters Friday after he vowed to a group of religious conservatives that Kavanaugh would soon be on the Supreme Court. It had seemed assured before the 51-year-old California college professor went public a week ago with her allegation that Kavanaugh assaulted her at a party when they were in high school. Kavanaugh denies the accusation.

The Democratic Senate offices reviewing the allegations believe that they merit further investigation. She recalled another male student shouting about the incident.
Grilled on Good Morning America by ABC News Chief Correspondent George Stephanopopulos, Farrow insisted Deborah Ramirez came forward only after Senate Democrats "began looking" at the alleged incident with Kavanaugh.
Interested in Supreme Court?Among them, Kavanaugh won't be in the room when she recounts her story and press access will be limited.
According to The New York Times, the federal judge has calendars from the summer of 1982 he plans to share with senators showing he was out of town most of that time with no indication of the party of concern. "For people to come out of the woodwork from 36 years ago and 30 years ago and never mentioned it, all of a sudden it happens", the president complained. Countless people from every phase of Brett Kavanaugh's life have testified that he is a good man of the highest character and integrity.
The magazine reported that Ms Ramirez was reluctant at first to speak publicly "partly because her memories contained gaps because she had been drinking at the time of the alleged incident".
"Of course, we will attempt to evaluate these new claims", Foy said in a statement, adding that the committee's Republican staff only learned of Ramirez's allegation from the New Yorker article on Sunday evening.
The Ford lawyers' statement also said further details about the upcoming hearing are still to be worked out. I can't say that at 53, but when I was 19 or 20, I was vulnerable.
Before Mr Kavanaugh can take up the vacant seat, he has to be approved by the 21-strong Senate Judiciary Committee and then the whole Senate.
