Politico reported that the email was in response to a letter from a lawyer for the GOP majority staff, which said: "I understand that you have been identified as an individual who was in attendance at a party that occurred circa 1982 described in a recent Washington Post article".

"As with any witness who comes before the Senate, the Senate Judiciary Committee can not hand over its constitutional duties to attorneys for outside witnesses", Mike Davis, Senator Grassley's top nominations counsel, wrote in an email exchange with Ms Ford's lawyers obtained by the Associated Press.

In a statement, the White House claimed that neither Kavanaugh nor anyone within the administration shared the accuser's name with Whelan.

Late Saturday, an attorney for a woman believed to be one of the witnesses Ford said was at the party released a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee and CBS News denying she was at the party.

The New York Times and Washington Post have stories.

But after consultation with a lawyer, Ramirez told the magazine she felt confident enough in her recollection that it happened.

The White House response shows a fresh willingness to attack Ford, coming after a series of critical comments from President Donald Trump the day before about her credibility.

Ramirez's allegations follow allegations from Palo Alto University professor Christine Blasey Ford, who said Kavanaugh assaulted her at a high school party in the early 1980s.

I have always remarked on the hypocrisy of male politicians who bleat about the sanctity of life but who secretly obtain abortions for their daughters, wives or girlfriends.

"I am with Judge Kavanaugh, and I look forward to a vote", Trump said. Kerri Kupec, an administration spokesperson, claimed that the new allegation was part of a "coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man".
