A powerful typhoon hurtled toward Japan's mainland Sunday after injuring dozens on southern islands, as weather officials warned that fierce winds and torrential rain could trigger landslides and floods.
Typhoon Trami, the 28th numbered storm and fifth super typhoon of the season, battered Okinawa with 103-mph sustained winds and 132-mph gusts overnight Saturday into Sunday morning.
Japan issued evacuation orders and warnings to about 700,000 households in southern and western Japan.
Kansai International Airport in Osaka plans to temporarily close its two runways from early Sunday, several hours ahead of Trami's landfall, to avoid a repeat of August when Typhoon Jebi flooded a runway and terminals, trapping thousands of passengers.
At least 386 flights were cancelled mainly in western Japan, according to public broadcaster NHK.
About 320 domestic and global flights into and out of Naha Airport were canceled for September 29.
