Syrian air defense respond to suspected Israeli attack

Warplanes flying over Lebanon fired missiles toward areas near the Syrian capital of Damascus late Tuesday and some of the missiles were shot down by air defence units, Syrian regime media said.

It said it activated its air defence systems to bring down a Syrian missile.

Lebanese state-run National News Agency said Israeli war planes performed mock raids above southern Lebanon.

The broadcaster also posted a video on its YouTube blog, showing Syrian air defences intercepting projectiles.

Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a war monitor, said Israeli air strikes targeted three positions south of Damascus that are arms depots for Lebanon's Hezbollah group and Iranian forces.

Israel has on numerous occasions targeted Iranian and Hezbollah sites in Syria that it regards as threats to its own security.

An alleged Israeli airstrike in Syria Tuesday night hit several senior Hezbollah officials as they boarded a plane bound for Iran, Newsweek reported Wednesday morning, siting a Defense Department source. Citing a military official, SANA said the suspected Israeli missiles were launched "from over Lebanese territories".

No injuries or damage were reported, the IDF told CNN.

Experts say Israel is to be greatly affected by US President Donald Trump´s announcement of a withdrawal of American forces from Syria, as it would leave the area open to Iran and its partners to develop their military capacity.

Israel in recent years has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria against targets linked to Iran, which alongside its proxies and Russian Federation is fighting on behalf of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Three soldiers were injured and an ammunition depot damaged.
