Las Vegas authorities have issued a warrant for soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's DNA in connection with a rape investigation, the Wall Street Journal reports on Thursday.
"Mr. Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in Las Vegas in 2009 was consensual in nature", attorney Peter S. Christiansen said in a statement, "so it is not surprising that DNA would be present, nor that the police would make this very standard request as part of their investigation".
Mayorga went public with her story in an interview with Der Spiegel in September, saying the Portuguese worldwide raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room after a chance meeting in June 2009. She says she initially chose not to name the person who committed the alleged assault for fear of retribution.
Ronaldo has repeatedly denied the rape allegations.
A statement issued Thursday by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the warrant has been sent to authorities in Italy, where the five-time Ballon d'Or victor plays for league leaders Juventus.

Later that night, Mayorga went to the police to the report the assault and had a rape kit done.
Mayorga has previously indicated that she did not continue pressing charges out of fear of retribution from Ronaldo's camp, instead deciding to take a $375,000 settlement that came with a non-disclosure agreement that prevented her from further speaking on the matter.
Authorities in Las Vegas would then determine whether it matches genetic material found on Mayorga's dress.
Inside the document, Cristiano Ronaldo was said to have offered Kathryn Mayorga £287,000 for her not to speak about anything that happened between the two of them in Las Vegas.
