With hours to go until the Tesla Model Y is given its formal debut, the electric vehicle maker has teased its second crossover on Twitter. The Performance version will offer the most power, have standard all-wheel drive, and start at $61,200. The all-new electric vehicle, based on the Model 3, has now been seen for the first time.
This blindsided employees and investors alike, and Tesla backtracked 10 days later, saying in a blog post that more stores would remain open and that it will need to raise vehicle prices by about 3 percent on average worldwide. Spak said the model's impact on the Model 3 could be "significant" as crossover demand around the world has exceeded that of sedans.
Something interesting to note: The Model Y can seat seven.
The Long Range model is expected to offer 300 miles of range, while four-wheel drive Dual Motor and Performance versions will get 280 miles. Batteries were at a premium in 2018 "because all resources had to reallocated to Model 3 production - otherwise we were going to die", said the CEO. The Dual Motor AWD capable of 280 miles (450 km) and 4.8 seconds from 0 to 60 mph (96,56 km/h) will start at $51,000. Top speed is listed as 120 miles per hour for the Standard Range, up to 150 miles per hour for the Performance. Musk gave no new details about where the Model Y would be produced at Thursday's event. Keyless entry will allow you to unlock the vehicle with a mobile app, and the car's infotainment system is controlled via a single 15-inch touchscreen on the dash. Despite that, the Model 3 sedan was the best-selling luxury vehicle of any type in the USA past year, so expectations are high for the Y.
Split-folding second-row seats and a front boot provide a maximum storage space of 66 cubic feet, or more than 1800 litres.
The Y comes with a suite of 12 ultrasonic sensors and a 160-meter forward radar system.

He also spoke to American Airlines and other air carriers, and all parties agreed it was the "right" call. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are both at the crash site in Ethiopia, Chao said.

Crew Dragon: Elon Musk's SpaceX successfully launches spacecraft designed for astronauts
Boeing is now scheduled to follow SpaceX's flight with an uncrewed test launch of its Starliner spacecraft as early as next month. NASA stopped its Space Shuttle programme eight years ago. "To be frank, I'm a little emotionally exhausted", he said.
Tesla is hoping there will pent-up demand for the Model Y, almost four years after Musk first began touting the company's plans to make an SUV.
The cost of the Model Y Long Range will be about $47,000, with Standard Range one at a $39,000 price point-so $48,200 and $40,200 with the mandatory $1,200 destination fee.
This leads the carmaker on to the Model Y which is an SUV based on the Model 3 in the same way the Model X is based on the Model S. Ordering the vehicle requires a $2500 (R36 250) refundable deposit. He did say, however, that orders are now being taken with a $2,500 deposit.
Plenty has been made of the fact that Tesla is tackling a huge potential market with the Model Y. Crossovers and small SUVs are big business right now, and Elon Musk & Co. are fully aware that the demand for a more affordable auto than the Model X - but with similar SUV-esque styling cues - is considerable.
One of the headline figures for the Model Y is its 0.23 Cd.
