His comment comes after the Associated Press reported US soldiers were stopped and questioned by Mexican troops this month, while conducting a surveillance operation on the USA side of the border.

"The most important thing is to tell (Trump) we are not going to fight with the government of the United States".

The migrants say they are fleeing poverty and gang violence, but Trump has characterized many as criminals and has ramped up pressure on Mexico to help ease the strain on USA immigration authorities. "The Coyotes & Cartels have weapons!" the president tweeted early Wednesday.

Trump tweeted that "Mexico's Soldiers recently pulled guns on our National Guard Soldiers, probably as a diversionary tactic for drug smugglers on the Border", but he didn't support the drug-smuggling claim.

But on Wednesday, he returned to criticizing America's southern neighbor: "Mexico is not doing almost enough in apprehending & returning!"

"Though they were south of the border fence, United States soldiers remained in USA territory, north of the actual border", CBP officials explained in a statement after the incident.

The anti-establishment leftist said a plan announced last week to restrict migrants to Mexico's south - keeping them away from the U.S. border - was for their own safety and not a means to placate Washington. So far this year they have APPREHENDED 418,000 plus illegal immigrants, way up from last year.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the government is not letting migrants go wherever they please, but said that controls are for migrants' security because human traffickers are allegedly infiltrated among the caravans.

Trump has threatened for months to close the border if Mexico does not stop the flows of migrants, and if Congress does not act to end what he calls "loopholes" in immigration law that allow detained migrants to be released into the US until a scheduled court date.

Officials arrested or denied entry to more than 100,000 people along the Mexican border in March, more than twice as many as during the same period previous year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Civil rights groups convinced the lower court that the program, known as Migrant Protection Protocols, violated US obligations not to send asylum seekers to a country where they face fears of persecution.

"Whether it's asylum, whether it's anything you want, its illegal immigration, can't take you anymore".

On Wednesday, the president added his warning. This week, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the total apprehensions at the border for 2019 surpassed the total apprehensions for 2018. The White House said it was the most in a decade. "I don't think-it definitely wasn't trying to overtake the U.S".
