The White House confirmed to reporters that Trump received a letter from Kim on August 1.
In a solemn ceremony, the United States welcomed home on Wednesday human remains it said presumably included Americans killed in the 1950-1953 Korean War, and thanked North Korea for making good on a June summit pledge to hand them over. "I am not at all surprised that you took this kind action", Trump said. "Also, thank you for your nice letter - l look forward to seeing you soon!" White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the correspondence was "aimed at following up on their meeting in and advancing the commitments made in the US-DPRK joint statement".
Additionally, if any unarmed USA officials plan to return to North Korea to recover additional remains from the war, the Korean People's Army of the North will provide security, officials said.
"There is not a second meeting that is now locked in or finalized".
"Certainly open to that discussion, but there isn't a meeting planned", she said at a regular press briefing, adding that Trump has written a reply to Kim's letter.

Trump attorneys waive privilege on secret recording about ex-Playmate payment
Rachel Maddow suspects the news of this damning tape Michael Cohen has of Donald Trump may have been leaked from the Trump camp. He also said that Trump told Cohen that any payment should be by check, not cash, so it could be documented properly.
The U.S. ambassador also expressed skepticism regarding North Korea's dismantling of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site and the missile site at Tongchang-ri.
It was later revealed that North Korea didn't actually hand over any remains.
Meanwhile, 38 North, a USA website monitoring the regime, said last month that satellite imagery pointed to the dismantlement of a missile engine testing site in line with Kim's verbal promise to Trump at the summit.
The Hawaii military laboratory that analyzes and identifies the remains is planning to double the number of people working on its Korean War team to 10 from five as a result of this week's influx, chief scientist John Byrd said, noting that the process of DNA sampling would begin immediately.
Pence also praised Trump for having the nation's fallen war heroes "on his heart" during his summit with Kim, which was focused on denuclearization of the Korea Peninsula.
In July, he revealed the full contents of another letter from Kim on Twitter.
