The reimposition of sanctions on Iran will have major impact on countries like India, with which it has traditional and historic trade relationship.

Asked if Tehran would be able to evade the sanctions, Pompeo told reporters that "the United States is going to enforce the sanctions". The officials accuse Iran's rulers of being the biggest funders of terrorism in the world, supporting dictators, and playing a destabilizing role in the Middle East.

Pompeo says the sanctions will be rigorously enforced and remain in place until the Iranian government radically changes course.

President Donald Trump is signing an executive order reimposing many sanctions on Iran, three months after pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, sanctions against a wide range of Iranian industries come into effect, including traditional Iranian rug exports.

Renewing sanctions against the Iranian regime will pressure the country's economy and further lower the value of its currency, National Security Adviser John Bolton said.

"President Trump will continue to stand up to the Iranian regime's aggression, and the United States will fully enforce the reimposed sanctions", the White House statement said, maintaining that the 2015 deal was "defective at its core".

The first set of USA sanctions coming back on Monday target Iran's automotive sector as well as gold and other metals.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attends a ceremony in a military academy in Tehran on June 30, 2018.

A second set of USA sanctions will be reimposed in early November and target Iran's oil sector and central bank.

While Iran's economy is in poor shape, it isn't in the critical condition it was when the Iran nuclear deal was reached.

The transition period was meant to provide companies already doing business with Iran some time to wind down their activities.

The European Union voiced regret on Monday at the looming US sanctions.

The European Union issued a "blocking statute" Monday to protect European businesses from the sanctions.

According to the Washington Examiner, "Monday's deadline marks the end of a 90-day "wind-down" period the administration provided to companies and individuals doing business with Iran after exiting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May". The president doubled down on criticism on in his statement on sanctions on August 6.

"The exercise was conducted with the aim of controlling and safeguarding the security of the global waterway within the framework of the IRGC's annual calendar exercises program", the force's spokesman Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif said Sunday. Senior administration officials believe the latest sanctions by the US will add to the regime's difficulties in governing. Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard on Sunday acknowledged conducting recent naval exercises near the crucial Strait of Hormuz after renewing threats to cut off the waterway to oil traders.
